Rebekah is happily married to Dathan, enjoying life in a simple Amish community amongst friends and family members. They have big plans for raising their family of five children, and hope to have more children whenever God provides. However, everything changes in Rebekah’s life when a fateful visit to town ends her husband’s life and the life of her daughter.
To add to her grief, Rebekah soon discovers that she was pregnant when her husband died, and the little one growing inside of her seems determined to make her forget her sorrow. It is not an easy pregnancy, but a friendship with Edom soon gives her new hope for her future and the future of her unborn child. However, their bond is not a conventional one, and it will take everything within her to make it work.
“He’s all right. Naomi’s death shattered his life. Isaac says he is not smiling and is just working and keeping himself occupied, even into late in the evening when most of us are sitting down to relax for a spell. He doesn’t speak a lot at all. I have not seen him out except at the Bishop’s for church this last week. He doesn’t go into town at all. He won’t even consider it.”
“I understand that feeling.” Rebekah said quietly. “I may not return there myself for some time. I can’t get the memory of…what happened out of my head. It’s slowly fading. But…it’s still very much a part of my mind…”
Edom and Naomi are also enjoying a simple Amish life amongst family and friends, within the same community as Dathan and Rebekah. They also have big plans for a happy life, interrupted the same fateful afternoon when Naomi is also killed as a result of the same terrible gunfight. Edom is not coping well with her loss, although he is determined to help poor Rebekah and her children during their time of grief.
He never plans on falling in love with the pretty widow; as he never intends for his heart to become attached to another woman. God seems to have other plans for his life though, if only Edom will allow himself to love again. After all, he may be the only hope for Rebekah and her children…
